This book is set in the 1920's-1940's. Two girls are forced to marry American/Chinese men to wave off their father's debt. They do not want to go, but as the Japanese move to take over, the girls and their mother flee, but only the girls survive. Next, they face the challenge of surviving in America with their husbands.
